I sell a pakistani-made trainer with a fairtrade logo for the cotton. Consumers don’t recognise that manufacturing in democratic welfare states can be a good ethical choice; I guess a lot of them think India is still a poor country and that the lack of a welfare state in most of the country is not for westerners to think about. What I know is that Rosebank Slippers had trouble selling their products for under £5 a pair and that a wholesaler I spoke to told me that it was too expensive; another is reluctant to put much british or manufacturer branding on the products they sell from the UK. So Rosebank Slippers went bust for selling at £5 instead of £3 when most of us pay £5-£20+ retail for slippers anyway; it’s a question of public perception that makes some brands sell for more than others and at the moment, people don’t get it for UK-made products. I hope they do, before we all have to work in China.
