Particularly shoes (Barkers is best), furniture and beds (Vispring please), lighting (BTC will do nicely), home decor (Morris & Co. the current favourite), ceramics (Burleigh or RCD, can’t decide), hifi equipment (Rega in my sights).

There are several categories that we simply don’t compete in any more – such as domestic appliances, and clothing up to a point. IMO, Burberry has done huge damage to that sector by not supporting British manufacturing.

It doesn’t surprise me that one third of respondents in Britain couldn’t think of anything the country makes best – our manufacturing is now mostly for “upscale” markets, as the Americans would say. And people here are still so obsessed with bling, Love Island, Katie Price etc., that they wouldn’t recognise understated British taste if it slapped them round the face. That’ll probably take decades to change, if it does at all…
